Can the Schools Help if I Suspect My Child Has a Learning Issue or Learning DisabilitY?

Question: Let’s say I’m a parent or caregiver and I suspect my child has a specific issue with learning, speech, sensory, motor, or some other challenge—Can the school help with that?

Answer:

Yes, schools can evaluate under many domains. They include (but are not limited to):

  • academic or cognitive

  • communication

  • health (as it relates to school)

  • vision and hearing

  • sensory

  • executive functioning

  • emotional (as it relates to school)

  • physical

  • fine and gross motor

They can evaluate under any of those domains. To start, I would suggest putting a request for an evaluation (in writing!) and making your request to either the principal, the teacher, or special education director.
