Is it Too Late for my High Schooler to Qualify for an IEP?

NO. If a disability exists with an adverse impact on their education, they qualify. It’s never too late. I had a parent this week report that the Assistant Principal asked her, “why bother?” He reasoned that the evaluation takes 3 months (60 school days) and graduation was in May. Why bother? I can’t image the stab to the heart that parent must have felt. Why bother? Because her child is struggling and the school district has a responsibility for Child Find…to find and serve students with disabilities. Why bother? Because the school district was incorrect when they told you freshman year he wouldn’t qualify because he was home schooled. Why bother? Because the school district failed to look at his records from a private school that qualified him for special education interventions in reading and math. Why bother? Because it’s your job and it’s her child. And he is worth it.
