Where do I start if I suspect that my child is having a learning, speech, sensory, motor, or some other challenge?
Question: Let’s say I’m a parent or caregiver, and I suspect my child is having a learning, speech, sensory, motor, or some other sort of challenge—what do I do? Where do I start?
Answer:
The answer to this question depends on the age of the child. But regardless of the age of the child, starting with the pediatrician or health care provider is always a logical choice. Get their opinion. Get an evaluation done in a medical or a healthcare field.
Another avenue that you could use is the school system. Every school system has an early childhood department. If your child is before the age of first grade, I would highly suggest you reach out to them and share your concerns. See if they have screenings available.
If your child is elementary or high school, I would start with the school district. In writing, state your concerns. I would recommend that you send an email to the principal or the Special Education Director and explain what your concerns are. You can flat out ask for an evaluation.
If you already have outside therapist, such as an SLP (speech and language pathologist) or an OT (Occupational Therapist), you can also ask their opinions and have them help you navigate to the school district as well.
